A real featured image caption

These are the actual published outputs of the widget on a sample page whose featured image has a captioned credit link: as written, styled for under a hero image, and as plain uppercase text.

02 / Inside WordPress

Featured image caption controls in Elementor

Content sets whether credit links and emphasis are kept, text before and after, a fallback when there is no caption, the HTML tag and an optional icon. The Style tab covers typography, colour, alignment, background, border, radius and padding, plus icon position, size, gap and colour.

03 / Website use cases

Where to use featured image caption

Templates that use the featured image as a hero rarely show its caption, so photo credits and context written in the Media Library never reach visitors. Featured image caption shows that caption for whichever post is being viewed, keeps credit links, and prints nothing when there is no caption.

Featured image caption compatibility with Elementor

WordPress 6.5+PHP 8.0+Elementor 3.25+
  • Requires Elementor.
  • Caption only, not the image.
  • Public posts only.

Complementor uses classic Elementor APIs. Atomic-native controls are not implemented. Check your theme, cache and integrations on a staging site before release.

08 / Common setup problems

Troubleshoot featured image caption

Check these settings if the published page behaves differently from the editor.

Why is nothing shown?

The post has no featured image, or its image has no caption. Add one in the Media Library or set Text when source is empty.

Why is the credit link missing?

Keep links and emphasis is off. Turn it on in the Content tab.

Why is the caption on a draft not shown?

Only public posts are used, so drafts, private and password-protected posts show nothing.

Does it show the image too?

No. Use Elementor's image or featured image tools for the image itself.

09 / Frequently asked questions

Featured image caption plugin questions

Does it need Elementor Pro?

No. It works with the free version of Elementor.

Where does the caption come from?

From the Caption field of the featured image in the WordPress Media Library.

Is the caption HTML safe?

Yes. Only links, italics and bold are kept; scripts and other markup are removed.

Does it work on pages and custom post types?

Yes, on any public post type that supports featured images.

Is it accessible?

Yes. It is ordinary text with real links, and the optional icon is hidden from screen readers.
