Editing aids

Find images without good alt text before you publish.

This widget is shown only while editing, to people who can edit the post. The examples were captured in WordPress Preview of a post with six images, as an editor of that post sees them; visitors see nothing.

6 images: 1 described, 1 marked as decorative (empty alternative text), 4 to check.

  • enamel-mug-front.jpg Alternative text: "IMG_2041"The alternative text looks like a file name.Edit in the Media Library (opens in a new tab)
  • enamel-mug-front.jpgNo alternative text. Describe the image, or set it empty if it is only decorative.
  • enamel-mug-front.jpgIt is the only content of a link, so the link has no name. Describe where the link goes.
  • enamel-mug-front.jpg Alternative text: "Image of a mug"It starts with "image of" or similar; start with what it shows.

Images added in the block or classic editor keep the alternative text they were inserted with, so after changing it in the Media Library update the image in the post too. Elementor's Image widget reads the Media Library text.

Default settings while editing: an amber summary of described, decorative and problem images, with each problem image listed.
