Watercolour rewards patience. Before you start a painting, take a minute to plan where the lightest areas will be, because white in watercolour comes from the paper itself. Once you paint over it, you cannot get it back.

Work from light to dark. Lay a pale wash over the whole area first, let it dry completely, and only then add the middle tones. The darkest accents go in last, often with a smaller brush and less water.

Finally, step back often. Many paintings are overworked in the last ten minutes, so stop when the picture still feels a little fresh.

When the painting is dry, sign it lightly in pencil first. If you still like it the next morning, go over the signature in ink and pick a mount colour that echoes one of the quieter tones in the picture.

A four-paragraph tip with default settings: collapsed to 160px (140px on phones) with a fade and a "Read more" button whose chevron turns when open.
